Woven Leather Mules: How to Choose a Backless Flat
Woven leather mules combine a textured upper with an open heel. They are easy to recognize, but choosing a pair takes more than liking the weave: compare how much of the foot the upper covers, the shape of the toe and how securely the shoe stays with you as you walk.
This guide looks at two Macarena Collection designs: the 702 Woven Slide Mule and Panal Woven Leather Slide. Both have an open back, while their woven patterns give them different visual character.
What Makes a Mule Different From a Slingback?
A mule leaves the heel open without a strap behind it. A slingback has a strap around the back of the heel. “Slide” describes a slip-on silhouette and can overlap with the term mule; product names alone do not tell you whether the toe is covered.
Look at the actual photos. If a heel strap is part of your preference, compare the options in our woven slingback guide rather than assuming every woven flat has the same construction.
1. Start With Toe Coverage
The 702 has a closed woven toe and a backless profile. A covered toe changes the appearance of an outfit, but does not make the shoe fully enclosed: the heel remains exposed.
During a try-on, check that your toes sit comfortably inside the upper and your heel sits on the sole rather than beyond its edge. Do not choose a shorter size just to make an open-back shoe feel more secure.
2. Compare the Weave at Close Range
The 702 has a closely arranged woven front. Panal is described on its product page as having a thicker, honeycomb-style weave. These are useful visual differences if you are deciding between a quieter texture and a more prominent pattern.
A finer-looking weave is not automatically softer, and a thicker weave does not establish greater support. Review the material details and assess the particular pair instead of inferring performance from appearance.
3. Check How the Upper Holds Your Foot
With no heel strap, the upper does much of the work of keeping a mule on your foot. Try a few steps on a clean indoor surface and notice whether the shoe stays comfortably with your foot.
- Your toes should not feel squeezed.
- The upper should not create painful pressure across the instep.
- Your heel should sit within the sole.
- You should not have to curl your toes constantly to keep the shoe on.
If a pair slips excessively or feels painful, reassess the size or silhouette. Avoid assuming that breaking in the leather will solve every fit problem. Ask the store about the specific model if you need sizing help.
4. Match the Shape to Your Wardrobe
Straight or cropped jeans: A clean hem leaves the open heel visible and lets the woven front stand out. Start with a plain tee or relaxed shirt.
Loose trousers: Check that the hem clears the back of the shoe and does not slide underneath your heel. Try the outfit while walking, not only while standing in front of a mirror.
A simple skirt: A plain fabric gives the texture of the mule room to become the focal point. Keep the rest of the outfit uncluttered if you choose the more pronounced Panal weave.
For more combinations with woven footwear, see our jeans outfit guide. Choose the shoe shape and fit separately from the styling idea.
702 or Panal: Details to Review
The 702 product page lists genuine leather and Mexican handcrafting. Its selector currently lists Black and Tan, with US women's whole sizes 5–10.
The Panal product page also lists genuine leather and Mexican handcrafting. Its selector lists Brown, Black, Shedron and Tan, with US women's whole sizes 5–10.
Check availability for your chosen color and size. A listed size range does not mean every combination is in stock, and identical size labels do not guarantee identical fit between designs. If you wear a half size or need measurements, contact Macarena Collection before ordering.
Before You Decide
- Compare top and side photographs, including the open heel.
- Check material details for the exact model.
- Confirm the selected color and size are available.
- Consider whether you prefer a backless shoe or a heel strap.
- Review the current return conditions before wearing the pair outdoors.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Mules Always Open-Toe?
No. A mule can have a closed toe and an open heel, as the 702 does. Check the photographs rather than relying on the name alone.
Should You Size Down in Leather Mules?
There is no universal rule. Choose a size that accommodates your toes and heel, and ask about the particular model if you are unsure. Sizing down is not a reliable solution for slipping.
Are Backless Flats Suitable for Long Walks?
That depends on the pair, fit, route and wearer. A flat sole or woven upper alone does not establish walking comfort. Assess how securely the shoe stays on your foot and choose for the activity you have planned.
